fix credit
Cesar R asked:

I was stupid when I was 19 and never paid my pg&e bill when i was living on my own. I’m now 23 and am going to pay off my bill (which is only $58). Because of this though, I’m assuming my credit is horrible. What is the first step I need to take in order to fix my credit.

Go to the Consumer Credit Counseling. They
are a non-profit organization and will give you sound, legal advice

i think you should go with credit counseling agencies where you settle out your debt easily, they will give plan according to your situation and on your behalf they will pay all your debt, there are many on-line sources who provide this type of services, for your reference my one of friend has consolidated his loan from there to pay out all his debts with bad credit and also with minimum rate of interest.

Don’t go to credit counseling over a $58 bill.
First find out where your credit is. There is a difference between bad credit and no credit. A bill that is over 3 years old will no longer affect your credit. To pay it off my temporarily drop your score, but to have a 0 balance is better then a balance. What you need to do is establish credit. Never assume anything about your credit know the facts before you act.

The best way to establish credit is to get secured cards. You do this by opening savings accounts at your favorite bank, and get a credit card on each account. Use only 10% of the limit. The limit will be the amount you have in savings. Pay off the balance to 0 each month. Do this for 6 months and you will have credit. You should have 3 cards. One for emergency(flat tire, medical, etc.), one for every day (gas groceries things that you have budgeted as normal spending). One for collections (remember use only 10% of the limit on the card, so if you have a $500 card, and a $500 collection charge $50 a month for 10 months).
Pay each card off every month.

Get a copy of your credit report (AnnualCreditReport.com) and see what shows up. If there are any errors, dispute them with the credit bureaus.

If the debt is on your credit report, it is with a collection agency. Send the collection agency a letter offering to settle the debt in exchange for them removing the item from your credit report (delete for pay). This will improve your score.

Ask that an authorized agent of the collection agency sign and return a copy of your letter indicating acceptance of your settlement offer. Put lines at the bottom for signature, date, and print name. When you get the signed copy back, send them a money order. Do not give them direct access to your bank account.

Please don’t listen to any of those answers. Do not pay an old $58 collection. It will drop your score up to 50 points. What happens is that it brings an old collection account to current and hurts your score. The older a collection account is the less it hurts your score. Depending on what state you are in, the statue of limitations to collect on that account may have already passed. Also, depending on what kind of bill it was, you may be able to just dispute it.

Never get a secured credit card. There are much better ways to establish credit very inexpensively. If you would like help, please send me an email. Don’t assume that because you have one collection account that you have bad credit. Since it is old, it probably does not effect your score that much.

Pay you bill. Get a copy of your credit report. According to FICO only 25% of credit scores vary 20 points or more in a 90-day period.

Your credit score is a number that measures your risk in the eyes of creditors. A non-paid bill certainly does not elevate your risk status.

Why would I loan you money if you have proven you don’t pay others?
